COLOMBIA
The main cocoa producing departments are Santander, Antioquia, Arauca, Huila and
Tolima, which account for approximately 72% of the national production. Agro-
ecological conditions for cocoa are also good in Cundinamarca, Nariño, Meta, North
Santander, Sierra Nevada and Caquetá, where high-quality cocoa species can even
be used in restoration efforts.
DESPITE DIFFICULTIES, THE COUNTRY'S COCOA FARMERS ARE REMARKABLY RESILIENT
Over the last 20 years, the Colombian cocoa sector has enjoyed a continuous growth path, both in terms of are planted and production volume. This trend is expected to continue in the future, making the sector a source of development
opportunities for the rural population and all other members of the value chain.
Cocoa has also played a key role in illicit crop substitution processes and has been
declared the country’s “peace crop”.
